AirAsia Urges Don Mueang to Become Hub for Low-Cost Carriers
AirAsia group chief executive Tony Fernandes suggests turning Don Mueang Airport into a low-cost carrier hub, complete with lower operating charges than the main terminal.
The failure of Thai authorities to set up such a terminal has hampered the growth of the country's tourism industry and turning Don Mueang into a base for budget carriers presents a quick solution to help Thailand attract back foreign tourists whose numbers have dropped due to the civil unrest in the capital.
A terminal for budget carriers with lower charges would make it possible for LCCs to bring in more foreign tourists quickly as they could offer lower fares due to increased savings. Reducing airport tax from 700 baht would also encourage more visitors.
KL International Airport saw their earnings increase from budget travellers once the Low-Cost Carrier Terminal was completed and AoT could do likewise.
