Don Muang Airport to Reclaim Eastern Runway
The plans to refurbish Bangkok's Don Muang Airport will initially concentrate on the eastern runway, the area where floodwaters are first receding. The airport is expected to operational again within about 2 months.
The recovery plans are split into 2 phases of work. Renovation of the eastern runway is part one with work on the western runway to be compiled afterwards.
The 3.7 kilometer eastern runway, mainly used by military aircraft will be drained and rebuilt with a 30cm deep layer of concrete.
The western runway is still estimated to be 40cm underwater will be repaired once the waters naturally recede. The terminal building will also require renovation including the baggage handling system, electricity and water supplies and the cargo building. This second phase is expected to cost around 1 billion Baht.
Meanwhile, Bangkok's main international airport, Suvarnabhumi is handling the diverted planes from Don Muang and remains entirely unaffected by the floods.
