Record Flight Numbers at Thai Airports.
The Airports Authority of Thailand (AoT), have announced that they expect record numbers of passengers at 6 Thai airports this year (2011). They anticipate 46 million passengers at Suvarnabhumi Airport alone.
According to acting president of AoT, Niran Thiranartsin, the number of passengers at all 6 airports would be 65 million by the end of the fiscal year (September).
AoT now operate 6 Thai airports: Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, Phuket, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai and Hat Yai.
Niran said: ""In the first eight months of the fiscal year (October 2010 to May 2011), the number of passengers hit 44.77 million. The airports also accommodated a total of 295,000 flights. Our anticipation is the annualised number of passengers would be as high as 65 million with a number of 418,000 flights, which showed a 13 per cent and 8 per cent increase from the previous year,"
Suvarnabhumi will handle 46.28 million passengers even though its capacity is 45 million.
In period between October to April the frequency of flights increased by 11 per cent, to 258,457.
Despite May being the beginning of low season, passenger traffic also increased by 39% (year on year), as flight frequency increased 13 per cent.
These increasing figures mean that it is imperative that the Bt9 billion investment in a domestic passenger terminal as suggested by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) are carried out.
The plans for the domestic terminal would increase the airport's capacity to 65 million per year and would take over 3 and half years to build.
