Renovation for Don Mueang Airport
Bangkok's aging Don Mueang Airport was downgraded 5 years ago when Suvarnabhumi came into operation on the other side of the city.
But the passenger volume for the airport is set to rise as it will handle more flights from Asia.
For the past few years, domestic flights have been taking off and arriving from Don Mueang's Terminal 2, sharing the runway shared with a nearby air force base.
However, from August 1, following a THB 13 million makeover, those flights will transfer to terminal 1. Space has been increased by 40% and new shops installed
Terminal 1 is now more efficient and can handle 16 million passenger per year compared to 11 million at Terminal 2.
The airport is not currently operating anywhere near those levels - currently the figures stand at around 2.5 million passengers annually, with a short term goal set by the Airports Authority of Thailand (AoT) to increase to 4 million.
In order to achieve the increase the airport will handle more international flights and charter flights from low cost carriers like Orient Thai (previously One 2 Go) and Nok Air.
