Minister Prajin Juntong of Thailand's Transport Ministry plans to obtain another reprieve from Japan allowing Thai-registered aircrafts to continue flights to and from the country.

Japan has previously granted a temporary reprieve in favor of Thailand, allowing the latter's air carriers to still continue flights to and from Japan despite Thai air safety issues reported by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) a few months ago.

The aforementioned temporary reprieve will expire by the end of this month and ACM Prajin has gone to Japan to seek the country's approval of a possible extension.

ACM Prajin will be in Japan until May 29 as he is scheduled to execute a memorandum of cooperation regarding development of rail transport in Thailand. He will, however, take the opportunity to discuss the possibility of allowing Thai air carriers to continue conducting flights in and out of Japan.

According to the minister, Japan had previously expressed interest to help Thailand improve its aviation sector on a long-term basis. Amid this expression of support, the minister is hopeful that negotiations with Japan regarding the extension might turn out well.

About two months ago, Japan barred Thai-registered flights into the country after ICAO questioned the capacity of Thailand's Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) to issue airline certifications in favor of Thai air carriers.

Asian Air, Asia Atlantic Airlines, Jet Asia, NokScoot, Thai AirAsia X, and Thai Airways International were affected by said restriction.

Later however, Japan agreed to temporarily put off the restriction until end of May.
