Phuket Airport is approx. 32 km from central Phuket Town
and can take from 40 minutes to an hour by car. It is the second
busiest airport in Thailand after Bangkok although it is only small
and once you have passed through passport control it is a short walk
to the exit. The airport handles direct flights from several Asian
countries, such as Singapore, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Malaysia.
Domestic flights to/from Bangkok are frequent and take about an
hour. Phuket also has connections to the airports of Chiang Mai, Hat
Yai, Koh Samui, and Pattaya (Utapao). Local cut-price airlines, such
as Air Asia, Bangkok Air, One-Two-Go, Nok Airways and Thai Airways
all operate in/out of Phuket airport.
Taxi
Meter Taxis, distinctive by their yellow and red colours, can be
booked just outside the airport. An average fare from the airport to
Patong is 500 baht, Phuket Town 400 baht and Kata 600/650 baht.
You can book a private taxi at the limousine counter within the
airport at set fares. Destinations include: Phuket Town, Phuket
Pier, Kathu Bangthao, Laguna, Surin, Layan Kamala, Laem Sing, Phuket
Fantasea, Chalong Bay, Chalong Intersection, Patong, Kalim, Nanai,
Coral Beach, Nakalay, Kata, Karon Rawai, Naihan, Saiyuan, Phromthep
or Panwa Cape.
Bus
There is an Airport Bus (8411) that runs daily from the airport
to Phuket downtown and back. They are red/black and grey coloured
and leave from the parking area just outside the airport. A bus
leaves at approx. an hour and half intervals and costs 70 baht. The
buses depart Phuket Bus Terminal to the airport from 05:00 to
18:00hrs. and from the airport to Phuket Bus Terminal from 06:30 to
21:30hrs.
Within the airport is a limousine counter where you can book a
shared minibus to take you to Phuket Town, Patong, Nanai, Kata,
Karon or Merlin Beach. Average fares for this service are Patong 150
baht, Phuket 100 baht and Kata 180 baht. Be warned though, on route
to Phuket they will make a stop at a tour agency and ask where you
are staying, then they will try and sell you a tour or
accommodation. This can be quite frustrating and all adds time to
your journey.
Car Hire
There are car hire companies within the airport, Avis, Hertz,
Alamo and National. You will need a driving license to hire a car
along with your passport.
