Children’s Activities in Phuket
An interesting country to visit, Thailand is perfect for those of you with children. Thai people absolutely love kids and you will find they are welcome in most places at any time of the day. The locals here are friendly and hospitable too and it is still a relatively safe country to travel with children.
Travelling around the country is easy as there is a good infrastructure of buses, trains and domestic airlines to get you to any part of the country.
Phuket can be reached by a local flight from Bangkok for less than 2000 baht. There are also many flights to Phuket from the regional airports. Some international flights fly directly here and you don’t even have to change planes in Bangkok. There is only one airport on Phuket and it offers direct flights to other Asian cities, as well such as Singapore, Kuala Lumpar and Penang.
Once you are on the island of Phuket you are spoilt for choice as to which beach to spend your time on. Most of them are found on the western coast. Phukets beaches have aqua warm waters, powdery sand, and are dotted with casuarina and palm trees. Each one is unique in its own way and which you prefer will depend on your personal tastes.
Phuket isn’t only well known for its beaches however, there are plenty of other attractions to visit while you are here. If you have kids it can take a lot to keep them entertained. Here is a quick run down of sights to see and places to visit for children.
Phuket Aquarium is located on the far southeast of the island on Cape Panwa, it is not very large, but they have over a hundred species of marine life. The aquarium is Thailand's top marine biological research centre on tropical reef ecosystems and commercial fisheries. They also breed species of endangered sea turtles before releasing them into the ocean.
There’s a wild array of unusual sights to see at Phuket Zoo, along with the tigers, crocodiles, camels, ostriches and emus they also have some unusual shows going on. There’s the crocodile wrestling show with a guy giving a crocodile a kiss and putting his head in its mouth! You can see monkey’s doing maths, riding a bike, and heaps of other funny activities. There is a great Bird Park full of local and worldwide birds that fly free in the aviary, and an orchid garden.
Phuket Butterfly Garden & Insect World is specially designed for the breeding of tropical butterflies and moths. As you walk around they are flying freely all around you, you can see them sip the nectar from the flowers and laying tiny eggs. The Insectariums have an assortment of insect specimens including stick insects and insects related to Giant Millipedes, Scorpion and Tarantula.
Gibbons are often mistreated in Thailand, purchased for their cuteness and used to attract customers, when they are older and harder to control their owners don’t want them any longer and abandon them. The Gibbon Centre rehabilitates the gibbons by teaching them to take care of themselves, when ready they are released to uninhabited islands. This is quite educational for kids and the gibbons are cute too.
Phuket Fantasea is advertised as ‘a theatrical show of Thailand's Myths, Mysteries and Magic’. The show itself is quite entertaining with a mix of story-telling, dancing and cultural heritage, (it has 15 or so live elephants) clowns, trapezes and magicians. Kids will love it here for its atmosphere.
An elephant ride is an incredible experience for any age, especially for children. Sitting astride an elephant, hanging on for dear life as it negotiates a steep downhill slope, with amazing agility and sure-footedness. Some of the trips will take you through woodland and forests, so check a few out before deciding.
There are a couple of Horse Riding clubs in Phuket. You can ride along the beach in time for the sunset or through forests and woodland. They provide horses’ ideal for beginners or experts and instructors are available if you are a first timer.
There is a Go Karting track in Patong with a racing track of 750 meters. They have 160cc to 400cc Karts, High Speed Super Karts, and even Karts for the kids, capable of speeds from 40 to 110 km/h. They are open in the evening too for a spot of night racing.
